The Language Lunch series is a fun and time-saving opportunity to improve your English-language competence over a light buffet lunch which will be provided free of charge. In the winter semester, the series continues with two workshops: (1) Language Lunch: Little Building Blocks of the English Language Prepositions, Pronouns, and Determiners, and (2) English Pronunciation . You are welcome to book one or both workshops, but in any case please make sure that you register separately for each Language Lunch.
Content
- “It’s the little things in life that matter the most”: whilst it’s unlikely that this well-known English quote was originally used with reference to language proficiency, it is most definitely true! Whilst nouns, verbs, and adverbs in English are responsible for much of the “content” of our speech and writing, it is the much smaller words that allow our language to function. These function words, such as prepositions, pronouns, and determiners may appear unassuming at first glance, but in fact they are the little building blocks of the English language that make communication possible.
- In this interactive workshop, we will focus in particular on:
- Choosing the right determiner: using a, an, the, some, any, and the zero article
- Ensuring the correct pronoun: reflexives and relatives
- Using prepositions of time and place: until, by, on, in, etc.
