Language Lunch:
A Question of Style. Tone of Voice in Academic Writing

Good style is elusive. Most people would struggle to define it with any precision, but would probably claim that they “know it when they see it”. Most would also agree that even highly specialized academic texts benefit enormously if the author not only handles grammar and vocabulary competently, but also picks the tone of voice appropriate to their communicative intent and the needs of their audience. This brief lunchtime workshop is intended to pinpoint, explain and practice a variety of stylistic choices that together make up the “tone of voice” of a text.
