Spoken English in Academic Settings
Based on concrete examples from your own everyday work, this workshop offers you the opportunity to refine and perfect your spoken English.
Target Group
Academics with good English skills who would like to further consolidate and apply their English in a professional and international academic environment. In particular, those who would therefore like to engage intensively with the English language on a regular basis in order to prepare for a variety of academic settings (e.g. lectures, conference papers and panel discussions etc.).
Workshop Goals
- Perfection of existing English competence to avoid "fossilization" of language skills
- Refining spoken English for Academic Purposes as well as Social English in an intensive course
- Preparing for spontaneous conversation
- Improving pronunciation, vocabulary and fluency through individualized feedback
- Acquisition of specific terminology and idiomatic expressions for various kinds of academic settings such as conferences, lectures, etc.
Workshop Content
We will meet six times throughout the semester in small-group settings to facilitate tailor-made language activities and feedback:
- Extending and improving vocabulary, linguistic structures and communicative competence for this academic/scientific context (e.g. vague language, politeness)
- Individually tailored help with academic presentations (e.g. preparing slides for presentations, dealing with questions after presentations, opportunity of "dress rehearsal" workshops if required)
- Communicating within your scientific communities in formal and informal academic settings
- Enhancing your pronunciation (e.g. intonation, word and sentence stress, and intelligibility issues)
- Adapting to communicatory needs within a largely non-native speaker setting ("English as an International Language")
