Experimental Design and Implementation

This two-part workshop introduces the experimental method, discusses experimental design, and provides support in designing an experiment for a specific research question.
In the first meeting of the course, we will broadly review the basics of the experimental method and what it makes distinct to other methods of empirical investigations, discuss questions of experimental design and implementation as well as appropriate procedures of subject recruitment, programming tools, particularities of statistical and econometric analysis of experimental data, and other methodological issues. In the break between the two meetings participants will develop their own experimental research idea. In the second meeting, participants will receive personalized feedback and support in the experimental design of their project.

Target Group

The course addresses researchers from all levels and all disciplines at WU who are interested in using the experimental method in (one of) research projects. You should already have a general research idea / question in mind. The workshop language will be English.

Workshop Content

  • Experiments, theory, and other empirical methods
  • Motives and uses of experiments
  • External and internal validity
  • Experimental design issues (design basics, randomization, incentives and induced values, risk neutrality, elicitation methods, Hawthorne and experimenter demand effects, double blind procedures, instructions, repetition and stationary replication, payment procedures, participant matching, order effects, strategy method, chained tasks and incentive compatibility, particularities of field experiments)
  • Subject (self-)selection
  • Ethics and deception
  • Experimental software tools
  • Particularities of experimental stats & econometrics
  • Work on own experimental design project

Trainer

Prof. Dr. Ben Greiner

  • Ben Greiner studied business administration at Humboldt University Berlin. He completed his PhD in 2006 at the University of Cologne. From 2006 to 2008 he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard University / Harvard Business School. In the year 2008 he moved to Sydney, Australia, where he was a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) and then (tenured) Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor at the University of New South Wales. Since July 2016 he holds the Chair for Empirical Business Research at WU and leads the Institute for Markets and Strategy as well as the WU Competence Center for Experimental Research.
  • Almost all of Ben Greiner’s research utilizes experimental and empirical methods. He studies basic questions of social interaction in economic contexts. This includes how groups arrive at decisions, or how strategic uncertainty affects cooperation and market choices. Ben is also interested in the design and improvement of real markets and organisations.
