In a Nutshell: Presenting Research in Compact Formats
In spoken and written academic communication, there are scenarios in which time and space are at a premium. At conference dinners, for example, “what are you working on?” is a frequent question that people expect you to answer in a few sentences rather than by delivering a lecture; abstracts of 250 words or less are quickly becoming the norm; and some grant applications involve five-minute oral presentations and very brief Q&A sessions. In all of these settings, researchers need to communicate not only effectively, but also efficiently. In this workshop, we will discuss and practice the linguistic tools and techniques that allow speakers and writers to make the most of the time and space available.
