Introduction to R

R is an open-source software and a programming language designed for data manipulation, statistical computing and graphics that is growing vastly in popularity and importance. This workshop offers a brief introduction to R and will focus on the fundamentals of the program.

Target Group

This workshop targets all researchers with little to no R-programming experience who wish to start using R for their data manipulation, data management, or statistical analysis.

Workshop Content and Goals

The workshop offers an introduction to R and is designed to provide a gentle introduction to the basics of the program including following topics:

  • Operators and functions
  • R objects,
  • Data types and data structures
  • Data manipulation (e.g., subsetting)
  • Importing data into R and exporting data from R
  • R packages

Note that this workshop is concerned with the R basics and does not cover any statistical method or data visualization

Prior Knowledge and Preparation

No prior knowledge of R or RStudio is required for attending this workshop though some basic programming or data science experience is helpful. The workshop will take place in a computer lab where computers are equipped with R and RStudio. However, participants may also use their own laptops with R and RStudio installed prior to coming to the workshop, see:
