Proposal Writing Day

Writing successful research proposals is one of the basic skills in today’s research world. The writing of research proposals, however, differs significantly from writing journal articles. Research papers communicate that you have achieved tremendous things in the past. Good proposals persuade readers that your future work has the potential to achieve ground-breaking scientific, economic, societal and humanitarian impact.

Proposal writers often find themselves asking questions like: Where should I start? How can I stimulate the creative process? Who am I writing for and what do I want to achieve? This workshop presents some basic answers to these and other questions. Furthermore, experts from WU and research funding agencies will provide you with helpful hints on how to improve your proposals. They will allow you to look behind the scenes of research funding agencies and their reviewing processes.

Target Group

You should consider joining if

  • you already have a clear idea of the research questions that you want to answer in your project
  • you want to fit your proposal to the target readers’ expectations
  • you don’t know where and how to start, advance or finish your proposal
  • you want to try out some practical creative writing tools
  • the idea of escaping your daily routine for one day has a certain appeal for you

Objectives

The Proposal Writing Day

  • is an open space for researchers (PraeDoc, PostDoc, and beyond) who want to improve their proposal writing skills
  • provides participants with easy-to-use creative writing exercises
  • helps you to target your proposal towards a specific funding scheme
  • introduces you to some of WU’s most successful proposal-writers

Methods

The Proposal Day will guide you through the proposal writing process. There will also be a special focus on the structure and style of your proposal.

  • How are the main goals laid out?
  • How is the reader urged to see this as a truly significant and original project?
  • How is it organized?
  • What type of style was used?

Short writing tasks

These tasks can serve as an initial warm up before actually starting to write. What’s more, we can use writing to develop our thinking. You will do short writing tasks about

  • a key concept that you are going to deal with in a particular section
  • how the section you are working on relates to your proposal
  • what you would like your reader to learn from reading this part of the proposal

Writing sessions

In the programme of the Proposal Writing Day, writing sessions will be included. You will experience that writing with others who are writing can help to develop confidence, fluency and focus. Moreover, it can help you develop the discipline of regular writing.
A single writing session is divided into these basic stages:

goal setting –  goal sharing – writing time – reflection.

The approximate running time of a single session will be 45 minutes.

*) Research proposal:
The research proposal (r. p.) is one of the key genres in scholarly communication.
It is more than just a request for the funding of a research project.
The research proposal is also an
„argument for the significance of an idea“ and
a „blueprint for the work to be done“ and
a promise that the work will be done  (Scott L. Montgomery).

The proposal will be an instrument for planning you research activities and it will also serve as a literary reservoir for reporting your findings when the research has been carried out.
