Getting Ahead With Your Project

Many colleagues at WU face the challenge to coordinate and implement one or several projects besides their everyday tasks. Despite first experiences and/or basic project management seminars, there still occur new challenges and questions that have to be solved. Given the non-recurring, unique, and complex nature of projects this is a completely normal experience for all project managers.

This workshop combines two different approaches to support you in your daily project management activities and help you to get ahead with your project: 1) You get theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of project management from an experienced project manager and coach. 2) You work on concrete solutions for real practical cases and situations the participants are facing in their work routine. Collegial advice, a certain form of group coaching, is supposed to allow project coordinators to exchange experiences and support each other. This special form of collegial advice will also give participants the opportunity to establish in the long run their own peer support system – independent of the coach.

Target Group

Members of the administrative staff, who are coordinating projects and want to get input for their project management challenges.

Workshop Goals

  • To support project coordinators at the planning, design and implementation of their concrete projects
  • To develop a peer support system in the field of project management the participants can draw on even after completion of the workshop

Workshop Content

The focus of the coaching will be the discussion and reflection of concrete instances and challenges the participants are facing in their daily work. Therefore, the content will be defined by the participants and their projects. Besides these concrete case conferences also theoretical and practical content will be conveyed which will be adapted to the interests and questions of the participants. It could contain the following:

  • Framework conditions, use and limits of project management
  • Project planning and design
  • Project implementation and controlling
  • Introduction to relevant tools of project management (tools for analysis and implementation)
  • Monitoring and evaluation
  • Communication and coordination in complex project situations
  • Cooperation in the project team, especially if the employees come from different departments and/or belong to different hierarchy levels
  • Facilitation of project team meetings, workshops and other events
  • Dealing with difficult situations, e.g. disdain of appointments and due dates, conflicts etc.
  • Dealing with restricted resources

During the first meeting project management topics that need specific theory input will be defined by the group of participants and the semester programme will be structured accordingly.

Methods

  • Case conferences (collegial advice): Discussion and reflection of the participants’ concrete projects and the challenges and situations they are facing
  • Theory input and subject matter advise
  • Practical exercises and role plays based on specific situations
  • Self-reflection and feedback
