The Gioia Method is a popular method within economic sciences for analysing qualitative data. It aims at exploring data such as interviews, focus groups or observations via a step-by-step process of abstraction to arrive at a model that helps to understand the problems in a certain field. For this, the Gioia Methods draws strongly from Grounded Theory and has developed a unique coding strategy within this larger methodology. This workshop provides a practical introduction to the Gioia method while embedding it within its methodological context.
Target Group
Researchers working with qualitative data.
Goals
In this workshop we will learn how to analyse qualitative data following the Gioia method. The workshop will embed this specific coding technique within the fundamental principles Grounded Theory. Participants will learn about the origins of this method, strategies for gathering and sampling data. Furthermore, the workshop will provide a practical introduction into the various stages of the coding process of the Gioia method such as 1st Order, 2nd Order Analysis, building a data structure and model. This way, the participants will be able to analyse empirical qualitative data such as interviews, focus groups or observations following the guidance of this popular method.

This course is part of the ENGAGE.EU Staff Academy, an initiative to enable academic and administrative staff to take part in workshops across the partner universities of ENGAGE.EU (an alliance of leading European universities in business, economics, and the social sciences). Enhancing the professional skills of our staff is at the core of the ENGAGE.EU staff academy - an opportunity for you to access intercultural courses and new and rich experiences.
Registration process for WU staff:
Please register as usual via the "Register" button in the menu on the left and follow the instructions.
Registration process for staff members of ENGAGE.EU partner universities:
Please send us an e-mail to personneldevelopment@wu.ac.at with the following information:
- Course title
- Full name
- Gender
- Name of your university
- Organizational unit
- Personnel category: administrative or academic staff member, with or without leadership responsibility
Participation is free of charge for staff members of ENGAGE.EU partner universities. Nevertheless, please inform us before the registration deadline if you are unable to attend by email to personneldevelopment@wu.ac.at. There are often waiting lists and this will give another person the chance to attend.
