The Language Lunch series is a fun and time-saving opportunity to improve your English-language competence over a light buffet lunch which will be provided free of charge. In the winter semester, the series continues with three workshops: (1) Common Mistakes & False Friends, (2) Talking About Planning and Projects, and (3) How to Make Your English Writing Sound Less German. You are welcome to book one, two or all three workshops, but in any case please make sure that you register separately for each Language Lunch.

Content

Written English differs from written German in a number of ways that go well beyond basic grammar and word choice. For example, there is a stronger orientation towards the reader; overly complex syntax is avoided; and concrete verbs are preferred over abstract nouns. Briefly, in this workshop we will address the following areas:

  • writing effective sentences and paragraphs
  • employing strategies to make your texts more appealing
  • engaging the reader and helping them understand your texts
