Target group

Targeted participants for this workshop include researchers who wish to explore the benefits of a fruitful integration of qualitative and quantitative methods. It is also designed for those who, as representatives of either approach, seek ways to incorporate the other into their own research design.

Goals

The goal of the workshop is to explore the potential of mixed-methods designs in empirical research. It is intended to illustrate how qualitative and quantitative methods can be fruitful combined to gain a deeper understanding of a research problem. Additionally, it aims to highlight challenges in applying mixed methods and introduce strategies for quality assurance. The goal is for participants, upon completion of the workshop, to be able to assess the strengths and challenges of mixed methods and to choose appropriate designs for their future projects.

Content

The workshop will provide an introduction to the concept of mixed methods, its objectives, and its suitability for various research endeavours. Different designs will be presented, along with an explanation of how research questions can be formulated for mixed methods. We will discuss typical challenges arising from the integration of two different methodologies, which can also pose methodological difficulties. A comprehensive overview of common and contemporary approaches to method combinations will be presented, and details will be explained through examples.

Methods

The methods employed in the workshop include input, discussions, and activities. Participants who would like to discuss their specific project ideas or research questions are very welcome to send them in advance.
