Beschreibung

Grounded Theory is a key methodology within qualitative research. It aims at exploring data such as interviews, focus groups or observations to arrive at a theory or model that helps to understand the problems in a certain field. For this, Grounded Theory relies on continuously gathering data and on analysing (coding) data in an open-minded and exploratory way.

Target Group

Researchers from WU and partner universities across Europe (Engage.EU) working with qualitative data.

Goals

In this workshop we will learn how to conduct qualitative research within the Grounded Theory methodology. The workshop will explore the core principles of this methodology, its origins, and the various existing approaches. This way, the participants will be able to gather and analyse empirical qualitative data such as interviews, focus groups or observations following the guidance of this popular approach to qualitative research.

Content

The contents of this course include:

  • Theoretical Background and introduction in Grounded Theory
    • Origins and variations of the methodology
    • Core principles and goals
    • Using Grounded Theory to guide the gathering of data.
  • Practical application and examples
    • Analysing data via Open Coding, Axial Coding and Selective Coding (Strauss & Corbin)
    • Creating Code Systems using the Coding Paradigm
    • Various practical exercises to apply Grounded Theory using participants or provided research data.

Methods

  • Grounded Theory (Strauss & Corbin)
  • Theoretical Sampling
  • Further approaches to Grounded Theory.

Competences

  • Selecting and gathering data in qualitative research
  • Coding qualitative data
  • Creating models or theories based on empirical data

This course is part of the ENGAGE.EU Staff Academy, an initiative to enable academic and administrative staff to take part in workshops across the partner universities of ENGAGE.EU (an alliance of leading European universities in business, economics, and the social sciences). Enhancing the professional skills of our staff is at the core of the ENGAGE.EU staff academy - an opportunity for you to access intercultural courses and new and rich experiences.

Registration process for WU staff:

Please register as usual via the "Register" button in the menu on the left and follow the instructions.

Registration process for staff members of ENGAGE.EU partner universities:

Please send us an e-mail to personneldevelopment@wu.ac.at with the following information:

  • Course title
  • Full name
  • Gender
  • Name of your university
  • Organizational unit
  • Personnel category: administrative or academic staff member, with or without leadership responsibility

Participation is free of charge for staff members of ENGAGE.EU partner universities.
