Many early career researchers feel challenged in status-oriented situations. They often prefer to communicate in a consensus-oriented way and do not feel comfortable setting boundaries or standing up for something important. This can not only cause difficulties, misunderstandings and unattractive working conditions, but can also cost respect, opportunities, and motivation.
Content
This seminar uses very concrete situations from everyday academic life to show how to create an exchange that is both respectful and friendly – especially when things get difficult. Typical examples are:
- meetings with heated discussions
- lecture during an application process for a new position
- discussions with high-ranking persons in public situations
Participants will have the opportunity to bring in their own cases and concerns before the event (anonymously if required).
Goals
At the end of the workshop, a toolbox is available for appropriate and successful communication in delicate situations. In addition, participants will be able to use the individual tools appropriately and according to their personalities.
The main goal is to be able to act confidently in situations that involve distribution battles, power rituals, or testing – and not rational arguments. At the same time, the goal is to maintain a good relationship even if opinions or ways of communicating differ greatly.
