Now in its fifth year, the Language Lunch series is a fun and time-saving opportunity to improve your English-language competence over lunch! In the winter semester, the series continues with the following three workshops:

These workshops are part of the “Language Lunch” series and can be booked individually. Please note that even if you would like to attend all three, you must still book them separately. If you want to sign up for "English? Which English? Whose English?” please click "Register" at the bottom of this page. If you want to sign up for the other ones, please click on the respective workshop title above.

Content

As the workplace and indeed WU becomes more and more international, English is increasingly spoken by non-native speakers and between non-native speakers. In this workshop, we will discuss some of the challenges this brings and some strategies for dealing with these challenges, as well as when it can be important to follow Standard English rules.

In particular, in this interactive workshop, participants will:

  • Gain awareness of different varieties of English
  • Learn about what aspects of language can enhance or impede communication
  • Discuss strategies for ensuring comprehension when speaking and listening
  • Practise phrases for highlighting key information

This workshop topic was developed from the employee survey 2021 together with other strategic topics of WU.
