Now in its fifth year, the Language Lunch series is a fun and time-saving opportunity to improve your English-language competence over lunch! In the summer semester, the series continues with the following three workshops:
- Participating Actively in Meetings Held in English
- “Sounding English”: Stress, Fillers, and Interjections
- Little Building Blocks of the English Language: Prepositions, Pronouns, and Determiners
These workshops are part of the “Language Lunch” series and can be booked individually. Please note that even if you would like to attend all three, you must still book them separately. If you want to sign up for "Little Building Blocks of the English Language: Prepositions, Pronouns, and Determiners", please click "Register" at the bottom of this page. If you want to sign up for the other ones, please click on the respective workshop title above.

“It’s the little things in life that matter the most”: whilst it’s unlikely that this well-known English quote was originally used with reference to language proficiency, it is most definitely true! Whilst nouns, verbs, and adverbs in English are responsible for much of the “content” of our speech and writing, it is the much smaller words that allow our language to function. These function words, such as prepositions, pronouns, and determiners may appear unassuming at first glance, but in fact they are the little building blocks of the English language that make communication possible.
In this interactive workshop, we will focus in particular on:
- Choosing the right determiner: using a, an, the, some, any, and the zero article
- Ensuring the correct pronoun: reflexives and relatives
- Using prepositions of time and place: until, by, on, in, etc.
