Language Lunches
2nd Lunch (online): Between the Lines: How English and German Writing Differ

Now in its fourth year, this series is a fun and time-saving opportunity to improve your English-language competence over lunch! In the summer semester, the series continues with the following two workshops:

Both workshops are part of the “Language Lunch” series and can be booked individually. Please note that even if you would like to attend both, you must still book them separately. If you want to sign up for "Between the lines: How English and German writing differ", please click "Register" at the bottom of this page. If you want to sign up for “Hitting the nail on the head: Improving spoken English through idioms”, please follow the link above.

Target Group

All WU employees are welcome (preferably at the B2 level and above according to the Common European Frame of Reference for Languages; you can find a guideline for self-evaluation here).

Content

Written English differs from written German in a number of ways that go well beyond basic grammar and word choice. For example, there is a stronger orientation towards the reader; overly complex syntax is avoided; and concrete verbs are preferred over abstract nouns. Briefly, in this workshop we will address the following areas:

  • writing effective sentences and paragraphs
  • employing strategies to make your texts more appealing
  • engaging the reader and helping them understand your texts

Location, date and time

Friday, 25 June 2021, 11.30 am - 2.00 pm

The webinar will be held via Zoom. All participants will receive the access link with our reminder e-mail one week before the workshop. For information on using MS Teams click here.

Fees and Registration

This workshop is open to a limited number of participants. The registration deadline is 11 June 2021.

Please note that you should notify us before the registration deadline if you are unable to attend the workshop. Otherwise the full fee will be charged. Please let the Personnel Development and Planning Office know if you will not be attending. There are often waiting lists for the workshops, and this will give one of your colleagues the chance to attend. In addition, if we can fill the vacancy with someone from the waiting list, no cancellation charges will apply for you.

To sign up for this workshop, please click "Register" at the bottom of this page. By registration for this workshop, you accept our terms and conditions “Workshop and Event Registration Information Sheet”. Further information on the collection of personal data can be found in the “Data Protection Statement” on our homepage.
