1st Lunch (online): Hitting the Nail on the Head: Improving Spoken English through Idioms
Now in its fourth year, the Language Lunch series is a fun and time-saving opportunity to improve your English-language competence over lunch! In the summer semester, the series continues with the following two workshops:

- 2nd Lunch (online): Between the Lines: How English and German Writing Differ
Both workshops are part of the “Language Lunch” series and can be booked individually. Please note that even if you would like to attend both, you must still book them separately. If you want to sign up for "Hitting the Nail on the Head: Improving Spoken English through Idioms", please click "Register" at the bottom of this page. Content
Learning English is hard: even if one spends decades learning how to speak and write the perfect English, failing to understand a particular phrase may turn an otherwise pleasant conversation rather awkward. Idioms rely heavily on social and cultural knowledge, most of which tend to be picked up based on context and through full immersion in a language. But, there are some strategies we might employ to make that process a little easier. Using idioms in everyday conversation will help your spoken English appear not only more advanced, but more natural too.
This workshop therefore aims to:
- examine the most frequent English idioms and explore why they are used
- identify strategies to disentangle what an idiom may mean
- compare idioms between languages
