Intensive Course: Honing Your Skills for Academic Purposes (B2 or Above)

Target Group

Your English feels a bit rusty but you don’t have much time to work on it? Or maybe you want to hone your language skills in a compact format to feel more settled in a variety of academic contexts? Then this course is designed for you.

Workshop Goals

The structure of this course is designed to combine the benefits of regular contact and practice with the practicality of a shortened overall course length. You will have an opportunity to reflect on how you use English in your own specific academic contexts, focussing particularly on how you deliver content competently and convincingly. In so doing, you will widen and deepen your knowledge of appropriate (academic) vocabulary, develop an awareness of where and when to choose the right grammatical structures, and learn to use powerful rhetorical tools to maximise communicative effect. Though also relevant to written genres, the skills you develop will particularly help you when teaching, presenting or holding academic discussions.

Workshop Content and Methods

You will be provided with structured input material and tasks focussing on a variety of elements, including

•    reinforcing and expanding your (academic) vocabulary
•    learning how and when to keep language clear and simple
•    building awareness of important grammatical nuances
•    using discourse markers and other linguistic devices appropriately

The course structure is designed to allow you to prepare tasks and work on your skills regularly and intensively. A variety of exercise types will be used and the workshop units will be very interactive.

As well as being offered general instruction you will receive feedback on your own strengths and weaknesses and individual advice on the areas you might need to improve in.
