R Statistical Software in Action for Newcomers
- in Kooperation mit dem Kompetenzzentrum für empirische Forschungsmethoden -
R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics that has gained widespread acceptance in the worldwide research community. This is due to several reasons:
It is an open source solution and a comprehensive statistical software that has state-of-the-art graphic capabilities and offers enormous flexibility. R can perform a broad and ever-growing range of analyses and data manipulation tasks.
This introductory workshop will not focus on any one of them in particular. Instead, the objective of the workshop will be to teach the basic knowledge needed to use R independently, thus helping you as participant initiate your own process of learning the specific tools needed for your research.
Target Group
For all researchers at any stage of their career, who want to get an overview of the R Studio interface, basic R syntax, and programming best-practices.
Workshop Content and Goals
The workshop will include some structured lectures, but emphasizes on practical exercises.
By learning the foundations of R, you will be able to bring your statistical analysis and data visualization skills to the next level.
- Grammar, objects, data types: Learn to import and explore data in R
- Finding and installing packages
- Basics of running statistical models
- Data visualization
- Resources for practicing and building R programing skills
Prior Knowledge and Preparation
A basic understanding of programing is helpful, but not required. The workshop will take place in a computer lab where computers are equipped with R and RStudio. However, participants may also use their own laptops as R and RStudio are available free of charge for all major operating systems – one of the many benefits of R. If you wish to do so you will be expected to have installed R and RStudio prior to coming to the workshop.
Workshop Format
The workshop involves a mix of slides, collaborative hands-on material and exercises.
