Communicating Effectively - Strategies for Written English

Target Group

Any member of staff (English level: intermediate or above) who wishes to become more fluent and confident in expressing themselves in written English.

Workshop Goals

This course is intended to help staff improve their written English strategies for WU-related situations.  By focusing on specific examples we will examine which lexical and grammatical tools are appropriate for individual contexts. Likely communication strategies will include dealing with awkward situations such as sending reminders or letters of rejection; communicating important information accurately; making requests; reacting to bad news; reacting to good news; apologising, etc.
In each context we will examine how to improve sentence and text structures, vocabulary and grammar, in order to achieve clear, logical and professional communication. Ultimately, participants should feel they are able to use English in WU-related settings with more effectiveness and confidence.

Workshop Content

The 3-session workshop will include a variety of exercises and tasks to encourage active participation and learning in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.  Participants will be encouraged to share examples of written text typical of their jobs (e.g. emails, notices, promotional literature, website texts etc), though this is not a requirement. Based on these and the other tasks practised in class, we will focus on the relevant areas for improvement, reviewing and practicing the related grammar and language points.  Through individual feedback, participants will better recognize their own strengths and weaknesses in their use of English for the specific communication strategies covered and more generally.
