Building Texts

Good writing is not only a question of mastering English grammar and vocabulary, but also a matter of linking ideas, developing arguments, and helping readers follow them. This workshop addresses the linguistic tools necessary to build English texts that are both clear and persuasive.

Target Group

The workshop is for faculty who wish to improve the clarity and persuasiveness of their academic texts.

Workshop Goals

The aim of this four-hour workshop is to introduce participants to the most important tools for building good English texts.

Workshop Content

On the basis of authentic examples, we are going to discuss issues such as the following:

  • Key properties of English texts: linearity, cohesion, explicit structure, clarity
  • How is textual cohesion achieved?
  • What makes texts rhetorically effective?
  • How can punctuation help to make texts more readable?
