Writing Abstracts
In her 2009 book, Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks, Wendy Belcher calls abstracts "a tool for success" (p. 54). Indeed, they are essential, as she puts it, for "getting found", "getting read" and "getting cited". Abstracts may not be exciting texts, and they are rarely fun to write, but they deserve attention simply because they are a staple genre of academic life. In the world of refereed journals and competitive conferences, they certainly play a key role. The more effective your abstract, the better your chance of acceptance. The main stylistic challenge, then, is to strike the right balance between conciseness, clarity and persuasive appeal.
Target Group
The workshop is for faculty who wish to improve the linguistic skills they need to write successful abstracts in English.
Workshop Goals
The aim of this four-hour workshop is to introduce participants to the structure and style typical of English abstracts.
Workshop Content
On the basis of real-life examples from a variety of disciplines, we are going to discuss issues such as the following:
• What are the most important stylistic devices for making abstracts compact yet persuasive?
• How is textual cohesion achieved?
• Is it ok to use "I" and "we" in abstracts?
• Should abstracts include references at all and, if so, how are they best integrated into the text?
