Learn how to make the most of using ATLAS.ti, a software for qualitative data analysis. This course not only teaches the basics of using the software but also provides guidance to envision the entire research project including personal consultation for the participants.
Goals
In this workshop we will learn to use ATLAS.ti during the different stages of the research process, from importing and exploring data to retrieving results. The workshop aims to give an overview to prepare participants for working autonomously with the software for academic research projects.
Content
Working with qualitative data mostly in textual form is essential for researchers in many disciplines. The workshop will provide a general introduction into ATLAS.ti, a research software specifically made to meet the requirements of qualitative research and offers an interactive session to learn the essential steps hands-on. The course will include:
- A general introduction into ATLAS.ti. The basic methodology of qualitative content analysis and similar approaches. The underlying concepts of the software, its advantages, use-cases, and first practical steps. (1st workshop day: 09:30am-3:00pm)
- Personal coaching and consultation for individual researchers or small groups to examine what ATLAS.ti can offer for answering their research questions or what problems need to be solved. (Timeslot: 1st workshop day, 3:30pm-5:00pm, individual appointments)
- An interactive hands-on session exploring the more advanced functionalities of ATLAS.ti (2nd workshop day 09:30am – 3:00pm)
- Participants will learn:
- Creating a consistent system of categories/codes
- Applying research categories to text
- Using memos, quotations, and networks
- More features based on the needs evaluated during the consulting sessions.

- Please bring your own laptop (PC or MAC) and preinstall the software (link will be provided).
- Appointments for the individual consulting will be made during the 1st workshop.
